Wisdom teeth generally erupt between the ages of 17 and 25. For some people they will erupt without incident just like all other teeth, while for others, they can become impacted which may cause pain and swelling near the offending tooth. Occasionally wisdom teeth may grow at such a severe angle that they damage the tooth in front. This may be asymptomatic for you, but can be detected in a special radiograph.
For some people, wisdom teeth may erupt normally, without you even knowing. For other people with impacted wisdom teeth, they may require extractions due to excessive food packing, bacterial ingress, destruction of the adjacent tooth or if it is causing misalignment of the adjacent teeth
