Dental Injuries
If you sustain a knock to your mouth or have a fall you may damage your teeth or their supporting bone.
Damaged teeth may be obvious – a fractured tooth, or a part of the tooth has chipped off or a filling is dislodged. In severe circumstances, the tooth may have moved in its socket or be knocked out completely.
If your tooth is knocked out, follow the instructions below.
-
Look for the tooth on the ground and when found, pick it up ensuring you hold the crown only. The crown is the bit you usually see in your mouth and looks different to the root which is a pointy cone shape.
-
Do not touch the tooth root – the cone shaped part
-
If possible, insert the tooth back into the socket ASAP.
-
If there is dirt/grass on the root you may need to wash it gently. If you are no-where near water, just insert the dirty tooth back into the mouth. Every second counts so do not run to a water supply if it is too far away. You may be able to remove large dirt particles with your fingers. Avoid touching the tooth root.
-
If you cannot reinsert the tooth, all the way – putting it in half way or more is better than nothing.
-
If you can not insert the tooth, store it in milk and bring it with you to the dentist.
-
If you don’t have milk – wrap the tooth in gladwrap. This keeps it moist.
-
You can store the tooth in a cup of spit, or if you don’t have a cup – you can store it in the side of your mouth.
-
Do not let the tooth dry out.
-
You can store the tooth in water if you cannot store it in the side of your mouth. Mothers may store their child’s tooth in this fashion
-
Get to Grandstand Dental Care or your nearest dentist as soon as possible. It is best to call first so they are ready for you when you arrive.
N.B. If a baby tooth is knocked out, do not reinsert it. |
